Our equestrian book club recently embarked on an exciting journey with our first read, Ride From The Heart by Jenny Rolfe. This book has, I think it's safe to say, become one of my all-time favourites and one I return to for inspiration constantly. Ride From The Heart offers more than just riding techniques; it opens a window into the mental and emotional connection between rider and horse. Jenny Rolfe’s writing is clear, engaging, and deeply inspiring, making it a must-read for anyone passionate about horses and riding.

Understanding the Mind-Body Connection in Riding

One of the most powerful themes in Ride From The Heart is the emphasis on the rider’s mental state and breathwork and how this directly influences the horse’s reactions and behavior. Jenny Rolfe explains that riding is not just a physical activity but a dialogue between two minds. When riders learn to calm their thoughts and focus their attention, horses respond with greater trust and cooperation.

For example, Rolfe shares stories of horses who struggled with anxiety, some both in and out of the saddle. Through her work on the ground, she focuses first on understanding the horses' personality and then starts to create an understanding between herself or her client and the horse. This in turn kickstarts the beginnings of a bond where she creates and facilitates mutual respect and trust. From my own experience as a coach, this is something that so many rider's struggle with but Jenny is able to convey the process in an easy-to-read and mindful manner throughout the book.

Building Trust and Communication with Your Horse

Trust is the foundation of any successful partnership with a horse. Ride From The Heart highlights how mental clarity and emotional calmness from the rider fosters greater trust in the horse. Rolfe explains that horses are highly sensitive to human emotions and body language. When a rider is tense or distracted, the horse picks up on this and may become anxious or resistant.

The book encourages riders to observe their horses closely and respond with empathy. For instance, if a horse shows signs of discomfort or hesitation, the rider should pause and assess their own mindset before proceeding. This mutual respect creates a positive feedback loop where both horse and rider feel safe and understood.

Stories That Inspire and Teach

Jenny Rolfe includes real-life examples from riders and, as mentioned above, horses who transformed their experiences by applying the mental techniques described in the book. One story features a rider who improved communication with a difficult horse by learning to listen and respond to subtle cues.

These stories are not only inspiring but also provide concrete evidence of how mental training can enhance riding skills and deepen the horse-human bond.

One thing that really came across throughout the book was Rolfe's ability to explain the process in a really easy manner as she herself would have learnt it. This makes the book very relatable and everything she describes feels "doable". I have found in the past that equestrian authors can get so caught up in their own brilliance that what they are attempting to share or educate their audience with, becomes utterly unattainable for the average rider through ambiguous wording, holding back of vital information etc. Not so with this book! Her educated responses are such a breath of fresh air as her written voice speaks with clarity.

Why This Book Matters for Every Rider

Ride From The Heart stands out because it addresses an often overlooked aspect of riding: the rider’s inner world. Many riders focus solely on physical skills or horse training methods, but Rolfe’s book reminds us that the mind plays a crucial role in every ride.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, this book offers valuable insights that can improve your riding experience. It encourages self-awareness, patience, and kindness toward both yourself and your horse, the epitome of horse-friendly ethical horsemanship.
