Some books change the way a conversation sounds. Our latest book club meeting did exactly that. Instead of swapping simple likes and dislikes, we found ourselves talking about timing, pressure, fear, curiosity, trust, memory, and the quiet signals horses give long before behaviour becomes obvious.
The book at the centre of the evening was Horse Brain Science by Dr Stephen Peters. It gave the group a shared language for something many horse people feel every day, but cannot always explain clearly: horses are not being “difficult” in the human sense. They are responding with a nervous system shaped by survival, learning, habit, and the environment around them.

What is the horse actually processing?
What has the horse learned from this situation before?
Is the response coming from confusion, tension, anticipation, pain, fear, habit, or true understanding?
That shift was the heart of the evening. We were not trying to excuse unsafe behaviour or pretend training does not matter. We were trying to read behaviour with more care.
A recurring point in the discussion was that horses do not share the same reasoning style as humans. They do not sit with a plan to embarrass a rider at the gate or ruin a lesson five minutes before the end. Their brains are built to notice threat, seek safety, repeat patterns, and conserve energy when they can.
That simple reminder has real consequences. If a horse reacts strongly to a plastic bag, a shadow, a tight girth, a new arena corner, or a sudden change in routine, the useful question is not “Why is this horse being silly?” The useful question is “What has this horse’s brain just decided is important?”
That question changes the next step.
It invites us to slow down, check the environment, observe the body, and choose a response that helps the horse learn rather than merely react.
The horse brain is practical, not abstract
One of the best parts of the book club conversation was how practical the science felt. Brain science is technical there is no doubt about that, but through careful curation, this book gives it life in more laymans terms.
We talked about everyday moments where a basic understanding of the horse brain helps:
A horse with past experiences of trauma
A horse that is anxious about leaving its field mates
A horse freezing when asked to load
A horse that has fear about a particular object or scenario
These are familiar examples. They are also moments where people can misread the horse if they focus only on the visible behaviour.
The group kept returning to one idea: the horse’s body often tells the story before the behaviour peaks.
Small signals matter. A raised head, tight mouth, fixed eye, shortened stride, busy tail, held breath, delayed response, or sudden stillness can all give clues. Not every sign means panic. Not every reaction needs a dramatic intervention. Still, these details help handlers and riders catch tension earlier.
That was one of the strongest takeaways from the discussion. Better observation gives the horse a better chance.
It also makes training safer. If we wait until the horse bolts, plants, spins, bucks, or refuses, we are late to the conversation. If we notice the smaller changes sooner, we can adjust the task, lower the pressure, change the environment, or give the horse a clearer question.

What we discussed about learning and memory
The part of the meeting that brought out the most nods was the discussion around learning.
Most of us could think of a horse that learned something very quickly, for better or worse. A horse that knows which pocket carries treats. A horse that anticipates canter in the same corner. Pressure was one of the liveliest parts of the meeting. Not because anyone argued against using aids, boundaries, or training structure. The challenge was around how quickly pressure can become unclear or too much.
Many horse people use pressure and release every day. A leg aid asks. A lead rope asks. A hand on the chest asks. A schooling aid asks. The key question becomes whether the horse understands how to find the answer.
If the horse does not understand, more pressure may create panic rather than learning.
Several readers shared versions of the same experience. A horse was asked a question, the horse became tense, the person repeated the aid with more force, and the situation escalated. Looking back through the lens of brain science, the group wondered whether the horse had been resistant, or simply unable to process the request in that moment.
This was one of the more thoughtful parts of the evening. It did not turn into a set of rigid rules. Instead, we talked about judgement.
Good horsemanship often sits in the small space between asking clearly and asking too much.

Fear, safety, and the prey animal lens
A strong theme across the discussion was the horse as a prey animal.
Most riders know this in theory. We say it often. Yet it is easy to forget what it means when a horse reacts to something we know is harmless. There was a clear difference in the discussion between habituation and flooding. Habituation gives the horse time to process and settle. Flooding removes the horse’s ability to choose or escape and can increase fear. The results may look similar for a moment, especially if the horse goes still, but the horse’s internal experience may be very different.
This part of the conversation was especially relevant for loading, clipping, hacking alone, and introducing new equipment.
The practical question we kept coming back to was:
Can the horse still think here?
If the answer is no, the next step should be smaller.

The human brain is part of the equation too
Although the book focused our attention on the horse, our discussion naturally turned back to people.
Human emotions travel down the lead rope and through the saddle more easily than we like to admit. If a rider expects trouble at the same gate every day, the horse may feel that tension before anything has happened. If a handler rushes because turnout is late or the farrier is waiting, the horse may not get the time needed to understand the request.
This was not about blaming people. Horses can be hard to read. Yards are busy. Weather can be unpleasant. Everyone has moments where patience runs out faster than planned.
The useful part was recognising that the human nervous system affects the training environment.
We talked about pride. Sometimes the hardest choice is to get off, return to groundwork, ask for help, or end on a smaller win. Yet those choices can protect the horse’s confidence and the person’s safety. A good session is not always the one where we do the most. Sometimes it is the one where the horse finishes softer than it started.
